25th September 2021 Sunderland – The Three Crowns Pub

I was in Sunderland to have lunch with my lovely sister, and whilst waiting for her arrival, I took a look at the preserved facade of The Three Crowns pub in Pan Lane.

The Three Crowns Hotel stood from 1793 until it closed in 1981. The front of the pub was pretty plain (and is now covered with modern cladding) but the side elevation is of glorious majolica tiles. Now looking uncared for and graffitied, it really deserves more than this.

Sunderland train station has been a gloomy hole since the Victorian building was demolished, and as part of the last refurbishment they covered one wall with a lighting installation. Made to give the sense that people were walking behind it, the effect is now ruined by individual and whole banks of lights not working. It is due for another re-development. Demolish the dilapidated overhead building and install a glass roof like the Victorians did. I’m sure they won’t though.
