5th July 2020 Belsay – emerging out of lockdown

As the English Heritage properties slowly started to open after lockdown, we headed to our favourite stately home, Belsay.

We last visited in winter, and were looking forward to seeing how the gardens had grown. Many flower beds have been replanted and are now beginning to come into their own, but it will be many years before they are at their spectacular best.

The house was unfortunately still closed, but we had a lovely visit, with lunch on the croquet lawn.

Highlights were the giant rhubarb at it’s peak, and an enormous tree reduced to a monolith,
