Water Sculpture

Water Sculpture, Winter Gardens, Sunderland Museum & Art Gallery

William Pye has won international acclaim as a sculptor. Since the mid-1970s water has been an essential part of his work. His original inspiration for water sculpture came from walking in the rain in Wales, and being fascinated by the way a thin film of water ran down the road in rhythmic patterns. William Pye’s commission for the Winter Gardens is more than ten metres high. The column of highly polished stainless steel has a thin later of water continuously flowing down over it.

Because of its size, the sculpture was installed on site at an early stage in the construction of the Winter Gardens which was built around it
