Tomb of Paolini

Tomb of Paolini, San Michele in Foro, Lucca, Italy.

A card nearby reads (rough translation):

Paolini’s link with the church of San Michele is also indicated by the presence of the family tomb at the beginning of the left side nave: on the floor in front of the first altar we see another rectangular tombstone, in sculpted and engraved white marble, framed in black marble. The inscription has been completely erased, but the decoration remains rigid: an oval shield adorned with leaves and skulls placed laterally; a smooth rectangle which presumably contained the inscription; a square divided into four sectors, decorated with ribbons and pairs of trumpets, containing an oval manhole cover with a skeleton. It is possible to identify the tombstone with the one cited in the Universal Collection of Sepulchral Inscriptions Bartolomeo Baronim. The location of the slab corresponds in fact to that indicated by Baroni, «in front of the altar of San Giuseppe» with the following transcription: «SEPULCRUM A FETRO PAULJNI NOBILI LUCEN(se) POSITUS MICHAEL ANGELUS ET FRATRES NICOLAII FILI! PRONE-POTES EXORNANDUM CURANT A(nno) D(omini) MDC». Matraia also cites the inscription, placing it in front of the Altar of the Virgin Mary, and reports the same transcription as the Baroniln. The painter Pietro, presumably also buried in this tomb, is the nephew of the one mentioned in the inscription.
