The Newcastle artist and wood-engraver Thomas Bewick was famous for his studies of birds and animals. Bewick liked this large oil painting of himself, calling it a ‘grand portrait’. On the table behind him are copies his books. He holds a graver, the tool of his craft, in his hand. The dog beside him belonged to his friend, the bookseller Emerson Charnley. The picture was painted by Bewick’s friend, the Newcastle artist William Nicholson. Nicholson exhibited this portrait in Edinburgh to advertise his skill when he moved there in 1814. |
