The Prima Jug

The Prima Jug, (1847), Sunderland Museum & Art Gallery

This is the largest example of local-made decorated pottery in the collection. It was made at Seaham pottery founded by Captain Plowright of Lynn in 1836. The jug’s inscription describes the opening of New Stranton Haven Harbour at Hartlepool. Records show that the ‘Prima’ was built in Sunderland in 1829, and led the procession into the harbour.
