Ciborium in St. Sebaldus Church, Nuremberg, Germany

Polychrome ciborium, in the ambulatory, to the left of the altar of Saint Peter. A fine example of Gothic sculpted decoration executed between 1375 and 1379. The statues represent Peter (with the key) and Sébald (as a pilgrim carrying his church). At the bottom, a burial of Jesus reminds us that the hosts are an incarnation of the body of Christ. During the war, the ciborium was walled up, and it remained intact.
