Prudhoe Chapel

The chapel in the gatehouse at Prudhoe Castle, Northumberland.

This upper chamber was reconstructed in the 13th century as a chapel. Narrow lancet windows were inserted to north and south, and a small east end was added, projecting out over the castle walls. This was separated from the main body of the chapel by a large pointed arch, one of the jambs of which contains a small piscina, a sink for washing holy vessels.
Towards the end of the 13th century, the upper part of the gatehouse was heightened, and an extra floor was added, reducing the height of the chapel. The upper chamber thus created was known later as the Wardrobe and contained cross-loops controlling the barbican passage and a fireplace in the north-east corner.
