Newspaper Seller, 1942
L S, Lowry (1887-1976) Oil painting

The 1940s and early 1950s marked a notable shift in Lowry’s compositions as he began a new focus towards the figures in landscapes. Newspaper Seller comes from an important period within this transition. During these years Lowry focused on typically smaller groups of figures, clustered together, with hints and suggestions of the presence of the industrial landscapes beyond, before the eventual loss of these all together in the purely white backgrounds with seemingly ‘floating’ figures) of his later paintings.
