Lloyd’s hailing station

The old Lloyd’s hailing station at North Shields.

Lloyd’s hailing station, at the end of a jetty sticking well out into the river, was used to hail ships (by voice)  to determine their cargo and destination for the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. It finally closed in 1969.

Above is the pier at South Shields, to the left the Old Low Light and at the bottom, the Sailor’s Mission.
