Grainger Street was built 1836-37, and was Newcastle’s fashionable shopping street. It was at the heart of the redevelopment of the town centre in Neo-Classical style by the businessman Richard Grainger. Electric street lights (the white globes) were a new development at the time. They contrast with the dimmer yellow glow of gaslight. One of the passers-by is a working woman wearing a long apron and shawl. Night-time city views were a speciality of Louis Grimshaw, who worked in the north of England.
