“Fleet” by Irene Brown is a collection of seven stainless steel collier ships in full sail set in the water of Market Dock.
Irene Brown is well known in South Tyneside for her bronze statue “Spirit of South Shields” located on a spur overlooking the river within the housing development at Market Dock. Irene has completed the programme of work for the site with the ‘Fleet’ commission in the dock behind the Spirit statue, who cradles a collier under one arm.
The brightly polished ships reflect patterns of both moving sky and water and give the impression of a fleet heading out to sea.
