Equestrian Statue of Alfonso XII

Bronze equestrian Statue of Alfonso XII (Madrid 1886, bronze) in the Museum of Málaga, Spain.

In 1931, the National Museum of Modern Art sent this piece to Malaga on long-term loan. At he time it was listed as the work of Mariano Benillure, who had made the monument to the Marques of Larios, installed in the city in 1899. Apparently it was an equestrian portrait created in 1902 for Madrid’s El Retiro Park, with a lifelike rendering of the horse  of which he was particularly proud. However, when he visited the museum in 1933, the artist emphatically denied that the work was his, as the copy failed to reproduce the workmanship that has filled him with such pride.
