Dysphoria

Dysphoria (1990) by Lizzie Rowe (born 1955), Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Oil on canvas
Purchased with a grant from the MLA/Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund, 1991

The artist has shown herself in a frilly, feminine dress surrounded by objects from home life. However, the scattered beads of the necklace on the floor introduce a sense of uncertainty. Dysphoria (the picture title) is emotional distress arising from conflict regarding gender identity. Elizabeth Rowe was a member of the Newcastle Group of painters and sculptors.
