Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a well-known Victorian writer and historian. He was born in Ecclefechan, Scotland. 

The sculptor of this portrait, Sir Joseph Boehm, settled in London from Austria in 1862. He was appointed Court Sculptor to Queen Victoria, Boehm and Carlyle knew each other well. 

Gift from Councillor J. W. Wayman, before 1906
