A Tanker off the North East Coast, 1965
L S, Lowry (1887-1976) Oil painting

In 1966 Lowry said, “The Sea, too, I love. To watch it is like letting off steam: it’s so vast. But generally I put nothing on the sea when I paint it. Perhaps a tiny boat if I must.” The boats that caught his attention were working vessels, tankers, tugs and ferries.
