12th February 2022 North Shields – Diving Gulls

A windy day today. On the Fish Quay black-headed gulls were huddling down. Their eponymous colouring is developing well as spring and the mating season approaches.

In the gut there was a solitary eider duck. I haven’t seen these on the Tyne before, but I know they are regular visitors.

On the beach, juvenile herring gulls were dive-bombing into the water, a practice I’ve never seen before. They appeared to be collecting shellfish, but were’nt being very successful.
