This building was designed and constructed in the 1780s as the purpose-built home for the St Luke’s Hospital for Poor Lunatics. It was sold to the Bank of England in 1916 to become the Bank’s printing works for producing banknotes. Damaged in the Blitz, the facility moved to Essex in 1958 and this complex was demolished in 1963 to be replaced by a shopping centre.
