Proclaiming Stagshaw Fair at Corbridge

The agent of the Duke of Northumberland is shown in the centre of Corbridge in Northumberland. He is about to announce the opening of Stagshaw Bank Fair. This was a very large summertime fair which took place throughout the 19th century. The formality of the group of officials is humorously contrasted with the few people gathered to hear the announcement.

Roses for the Invalid

This painting shows Hedley’s growing interest, in the 1890s, in painting natural light effects. In this summer scene, a young woman is cutting roses to brighten up the room of an ill person. Her blue-grey cap is a type worn in the fishing village of Staithes in Yorkshire. She is shown in ordinary working clothes, with her skirt pinned up under her apron to keep it clean.

Meal Time

The farm labourer has returned from work in the field, as indicated by the horse harness hung on the settle to the right. His wife is preparing a simple meal on a traditional girdle pan of either potato cakes or scones, while her husband rests from his labours with a newspaper and glass of home brewed beer. Heavy agricultural labour was generally the preserve of men while domestic duties and seasonal work was carried out by women. At this date almost all food and drink in the countryside was locally sourced and prepared at home.

Ralph Cruikshanks

A well-known and popular local character, Cruikshanks was a ferryman for 43 years. On his retirement, he set up as a picture frame gilder working at his house in Thomas Street, South Shields. Cruikshanks is remembered particularly for befriending ‘Wandering Willie, a much-loved ferry dog. Willie was a sheep-dog who lost his master when they were moving lambs from the Cheviots to the Cleveland Hills. For months he lingered by the ferry, ‘setting his teeth against the kindest efforts to win him from despair’. Willie never gave up looking for his owner, but eventually came to accept the kindness of the ferryman, who fed and looked after him for the rest of his life.

Ralph Hedley was a popular and influential artist, woodcarver and illustrator who often depicted scenes of everyday life on Tyneside. For a time he was Vice-President of the South Shields Art

Self Portrait

Ralph Hedley has shown himself with a fashionable pair of gloves and hat as well as his painting brushes and palette. He probably painted this portrait to celebrate his election as President of the Bewick Club in the summer of 1895. The Club was an artists’ exhibiting and educational society, which helped build up a thriving art community in Newcastle. Its exhibitions were popular and attracted many artists. Hedley also helped set up other North-East art societies.

Going Home

Two coal miners are shown returning home from Blaydon Main Colliery, near Gateshead. The young man has a cap to protect his head from low beams, and wears shorts because of the heat of the mine.

The men carry safety lamps invented in the North East. The Clanny lamp is on the left, and the Geordie lamp on the right. These prevented coal gas igniting the lamp flame. A print of this picture was very popular when it was produced in 1889.

Geordie Ha’ad the Bairn

Hedley modelled Geordie in this picture on Snowdon Pyle, a coal hewer from North Elswick Colliery.

The baby was his daughter Annie. Hedley’s picture illustrates a scene from a song by Joe Wilson (1841-1875), North-East writer and entertainer:

‘It’s startin’ te cry agyen,
Aw see tuts throo its gum.

Naw bonny bit pet, dinner fret,
Aw wish yor mutter wad cum”
