The women wearing aprons in the centre of this scene are ordinary working people. The landmarks of St Nicolas’ Church (it became a cathedral in 1882) and Grey’s Monument are visible in the distance. The artist, Elizabeth Burdon Sanderson, was taught painting by John Wilson Carmichael.
