The 1940s and early 1950s marked a notable shift in Lowry’s compositions as he began a new focus towards the figures in landscapes.

Newspaper Seller comes from an important period within this transition. During these years Lowry focused on typically smaller groups of figures, clustered together, with hints and suggestions of the presence of the industrial landscapes beyond, before the eventual loss of these all together in the purely white backgrounds (with seemingly ‘floating’ figures) of his later paintings.

In the 1940s Lowry’s almost obsessive interest in industrial landscapes began to lessen. In his paintings people now started to emerge from the crowd and become the centre of attention.

They were often social misfits, painted without sentiment and sometimes with a touch of humour.

Lowry composed a small pen and ink study for this painting while staying at the Seabur Hotel, Sunderland. Here, he was only a short taxi journey to the docks at South Shields, which became the subject for a small number of paintings and drawings of the bustling port at the mouth of the River Tyne. In this painting Lowry creates an un-easy dramatic

In 1966 Lowry said, ‘The Sea, too, I love. To watch it is like letting off steam: it’s so vast.

But generally I put nothing on the sea when ! paint it. Perhaps a tiny boat if I must. The boats that caught his attention were working vessels, tankers, tugs and ferries.

Lowry was much more interested in capturing the character and atmosphere of a place than in accurately recording it. In this view of the Lambton Drops, for example, the railway lines in the foreground have turned into a row of huts and local landmarks have been moved around.
