Although there is no longer any water to the north of the house, the lake with swans on it does not appear to have been imaginary. At the time of this being painted, the house was probably owned by Captain Francis Delaval (1692 – 1752) and his wife, Rhoda Apreece (d.1759). Their numerous and unruly children became known as the ‘Gay Delalvals’. Captain Francis was succeeded by his rakish son, Sir Francis Blake Delaval (1727 – 71). It seems plausible that the view was painted by John Joseph Bouttats, who painted views of Temple Newsam, near Leeds
