Central Station was opened in 1850 by Queen Victoria. The architect was john Dobson, who painted this watercolour to show how the building would look (though the finished station has low-refief pilasters rather than columns).

Dobson used an imposing Greek Revival style for the architecture. The station was part of the transformation of the centre of Newcastle in the year from about 1830 to 1850

The Old Fish Market, Sandhill

Fishwives are laying out their wares on tables in the Fishmarket on the Quayside at Newcastle.

While the men went to sea to catch the fish, the women in the family sold the fish at market. John Dobson’s design for a covered Fishmarket was built in 1823-26, and was added to the end of the Guildhall on the Quayside.

Interior of Grainger Market

The Grainger Market opened in 1835, and was a critical part of the redevelopment of central Newcastle by the businessman Richard Grainger. This picture shows the original arrangement of butchers’ shops with vegetable stalls in the centre. The architect John Dobson drew the building in this view, and his friend John Wilson Carmichael added the figures.
