Wealthy merchants originally lived here. By this time, however, the buildings were occupied by groups of families crowded together. Two signs picturing a grey horse mark the Grey Horse Inn. The building and a large area around were later destroyed in a terrible fire on October 6th 1854. George Balmer was a leading Newcastle painter of shipping scenes.
