Boldon Mill

West Mill at West Boldon was built in 1834. In 1893 a terrific gale, perhaps the Great Storm of November that year, spun the sails so fast that when the brake was applied the resulting friction and heat caused a fire that destroyed the sails and caused considerable other damage.

Other mills are known to have caught fire in this manner. Today the mill is a Grade II listed building and has been converted and incorporated into a house.

Brown used the mill as a central feature in this delicate watercolour. In the foreground he showed a labourer ploughing a field on the sloping hillside at west Boldon on a late-summer afternoon. In the distance stands the distinctive spire of the parish church of St Nicholas. Before the houses were built across this area, the mill and the church were both landmarks on the open hillside.

The Approaching Storm

Thomas Sidney Cooper was born in Canterbury, and apart from some time spent in Brussels, where he married, and London, he lived there all his life. He had work exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1833 to 1902, a remarkable and unique achievement, and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1867. Cooper is well-known for his paintings of cattle and sheep, and has earned the affectionate nickname ‘Cow Cooper’. His work can be found in many public collections in Britain, including the Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

He was a philanthropist in Canterbury and founded a school of art there. One of his students was Mary Tourtel, who created and illustrated the Rupert Bear children’s books.

Blackberrying

Harvey grew up in Penzance, Cornwall. He trained at the Penzance School af Arts and the Academie Julian in Paris and later became part of the Newlyn group of artists. The group was inspired by French painters af the time, who practised plein air painting (painting outdoors).

Harvey’s paintings often depicted fishermen, miners and farmers in the Cornish landscape. This late-summer scene shows a lady and a girl gathering blackberries near to the coast. The location appears to be beside Penlee Quarry just south of Newlyn and Penzance. In the distance can be seen Mount’s Bay and the tidal island of St Michaels Mount.

The figures are depicted in the close foreground. The lady appears rather distracted, as if deep in thought. The distance between her and the girt heightens this feeling that she is slightly removed from the activity. The vast cloud-filled sky dominates the composition, and together with the wide stretching landscape expresses the wonder and drama of life, perhaps echoing something of the lady’s thoughts.

Homewards

Boot was born in Manchester and moved to London where he worked as an artist and illustrator, and also as a writer. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and The Arts Club and exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy.

In Homewards Boot shows an idyllic rural scene. A mother and child pause in a lush landscape close to the elegant trunk of a silver birch tree. The artist has enjoyed capturing the light and tones of the grass, thistles, flowers and leaves which spread all around. In the background nestles a cottage, perhaps the destination of the lingering figures who seem, like the viewer, to be in awe of the beauty of nature.

The Head of The Lake (Derwentwater)

Carter was born at Warkworth, but later settled in Newcastle. He first had a job at the station newsagents W H Smith, then worked with his father running a restaurant and a public house. He took up painting as a hobby, but his skill as an artist soon led to him exhibiting and selling work. From 1898 he became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London.

Carter’s favourite subject was the hills and lakes of the Lake District.

In this painting he presents an idyllic classical-styled view of the upper reaches of Derwentwater. The path leads the viewer’s eye into the composition, echoing the sweeping curve of the lake. The lush greens of the grass and foliage and the still waters contrast with the bulk of the mountain looming out of the distant clouds, combining a sense of both the fine, soft beauty of nature and its raw power and drama.
