The Border Collie is a breed of British herding dog of the collie type of medium size. It originates in the region of the Anglo-Scottish border, and descends from the traditional sheepdogs once found all over the British Isles. It is kept mostly as a sheep-herding dog or as a companion animal. It competes with success in sheepdog trials. It has been claimed that it is the most intelligent breed of dog.

“Noble” (1871-1887)

Queen Victoria owned a number of collies who were called Noble. The dog in this painting is the most famous of them all, Noble IV (1871-87), who had been given to the Queen by Lady Charles Innes-Kerr, daughter-in-law of the Duchess of Roxburghe, in 1872. He died at Balmoral on 18 September 1887: ‘my darling old Noble… a grevious loss to me of a real friend’.

When Queen Victoria saw this picture on 3 March 1875 she thought it ‘excellent’. Barber was paid £55 for the picture on 12 May 1875. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1875 and placed at Osborne.

A Spaniel with two Puppies

Filippo Palizzi moved to France from his native Italy and gained quite a following in Paris in nineteenth century. In this work he has painstakingly painted the dogs’ hair in a lifelike manner, recreating their glossy coats. The puppy on the left boldly stares out at the viewer but stands close by its mother for reassurance.

Here, Joséphine has painted another of her dogs. This is the Bowes’ dog ‘Palette’, so called because of the shape of his ears. Joséphine and John had to leave Palette behind during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.
