Charles George Jefferson was born in South Shields. He painted from a young age and developed into a skilled artist. He began exhibiting in 1880 when he was living in Glasgow, with works shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and the Royal Scottish Academy. He returned to South Shields in the 1890s and had works shown in various Art Club exhibitions in the town.

Jefferson produced work in both oil and watercolour. He was best known as a painter of Scottish landscapes, in particular scenes of the Arran, Argyll and Perthshire areas. This painting shows the rocky cove of Frenchman’s Bay in South Shields.
