Oil painting on panel, Ann Danby, Lady Calverley (b. 1534),aged 37, British (English) School, 1571. Inscribed: ANNO DOMINI;1571./AETATIS SVE,.37. A three-quarter-length portrait, facing, in black surcoat over gold ornamented dress; arms top right. The label on the frame designates the sitter as ‘wife of Sir W. Calverley, daughter of Sir Christopher Farneley’. An old label on the back describes her as Ann, daughter of Sir Christopher Danby of Farneley, wife of Walter Calverley and ‘mother too that William Calverley who was pressed in the year 1573’. This is incorrect, for the murder of the family was done by Walter Calverley, son of William, in 1605. It is presumably her son William who is the subject of WAL/P/54.

The murder was committed by Walter Calverley the son of William in the year 1605. Back of portrait: Old faded piece of brown paper, torn. reads – Ann the Daughter of Sir Chris Dandyof Farneley, Wife to Walter Calverley & mother to that William Calverley who was pressed in the year 1573.”

Oil painting on panel, William Calverley (b.1557) as a Young Boy, aged 14, British (English) School, a lengthy inscription includes the following: DECÊBRIS DECIMO QUINTO: ANNO DOMINI 157Í/GUILIEEMUS CALVLEY: ANNOS NATUS, 14: DUOS MENSES, ET DIES VNDEVIGINTI. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young boy, facing, gazing at the spectator, standing, wearing a black and white doublet, his left hand on his sword his right hand holding his gloves, a black cap on his head with a white plume.

An Unknown Young Girl, possibly Elizabeth Ord, later Lady Blackett

Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Young Girl, possibly Elizabeth Ord, later Lady Blackett, British (English) School. circa 1710-1720. Inscribed: later 18th century, with name of sitter, centre r.: FRANCES. Daugr. of Hry. THOMPSON./of Esholt. A painted oval half-length portrait of a young girl, facing, gazing at the spectator in a white dress and pink cloak. Inscribed (relatively late) as a portrait of Frances, daughter of Henry Thompson of Esholt, the wife of Sir Walter Calverley, Kt. (1691), of whom there is a portrait as a widow in the Needlework Room. This is clearly impossible. It is most probable that she is either Elizabeth Ord (1759) the natural daughter and heiress of Sir William Blackett, 2nd Bart., and the wife of Sir Walter Calverley Blackett, or the latter’s sister, Julia Calverley (1706-68), the wife of Sir George Trevelyan, 3rd Bart. Of the two, Elizabeth Ord, as Sir William’s one and only, much-cherished child, is the more likely to have been painted as a little girl; but, because she was illegitimate, she would have been more quickly forgotten.

Oil painting on canvas (oval), Julia Blackett, Lady Calverley (1686-1736), British (English) School, on reverse with name of sitter; later 18thC inscription on obverse: JULIA CALVERLEY./Dr: of Sr: Wm: BLACKETT. Bart:/Nat: 1683. Denat: 1736. A half-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, dark hair with two curls on either side of her forehead, wearing a red dress fastened with jewels at breast and sleeve, over a white chemise. One of a set of four oval oil paintings.

Oil painting on canvas, Joyce Pye, Mrs Henry Calverley, British (English) School, late 17th century. Inscribed in the later 18th century, with name of sitter, top right: JOYCE.2d.wife of H.CALVERLEY./Daugt. of Sir Wr. PYE.; and on the back: Joyce, wife of Henry Calverley daughter of Sir Walter Pye. A half-length portrait of a mature woman, facing, gazing at the spectator, holding a piece of paper in her right hand on which is written: Silence O Walter Calverley./This is all that I will leave w.c./Time was I might have given/thee more/Now thanke thy selfe that/this is soe. It is addressed to her son and apparently was her legacy. Wearing a widow’s peak headdress, tied under the chin, a black dress and a single strand pearl necklace.
