Newcastle people enjoyed walking in Jesmond Dene, away from the smoky air of the town. The women wearing aprons in the centre of this scene are ordinary working people. The landmarks of St Nicolas’ Church (it became a cathedral in 18821) and Grey’s Monument are visible in the distance The artist, Elizabeth Burdon Sanderson, was taught painting by John Wilson Carrnichael
