The identity of this finely carved statue is not entirely clear, but as the figure is almost naked it could be Mercury (the god of trade and messenger to the gods), Apollo (the god of healing, prophecy and the sun) or one of the twin horsemen, Castor or Pollux, patrons of sailors and travellers.
