South African War Memorial

The South African War Memorial in Tynemouth.

This four-sided memorial is unlike any of the usual forms associated with war memorials. The structure rises in three stages, with pilasters on each corner of the base and scrolls on each corner of the middle. A bronze plaque is attached to two of the main faces, one holds the roll of honour and the other the inscription. The boss at the top of the monument looks as if it may originally have supported a finial. The memorial is in extremely poor condition.

A subscription fund to the memory of Tynemouth men killed in the Boer War paid for a dinner and some small souvenirs, but so much was contributed that £130 was put aside for a memorial. It was unveiled by William S.F. Broderick M.P., who praised ‘the admirable and patriotic spirit of the North of England’.
