Mowers

Mowers by Charles-Émile (1813-1894) Jacque in Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle

A man is mowing in the foreground: with back to him, two others are moving in the middle distance. They are all wearing hats to protect them from the sun which the picture gives the impression is beating down on them quite fiercely. The painting is so small one needs to look at it closely to appreciate its good qualities. Jacque, who had been a member of the Barbizon School, outlived all his fellow members.
