Launching the Lifeboat

Luke Clennell (1781–1840)

A group of South Shields pilots are seen launching a lifeboat. It is probable that the lifeboat in the painting is the Original, the first to be built in 1789.

Provenance: Purchased with assistance from MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the National Art Collection Fund.
