Destruction of the Spanish Armada

Destruction of the Spanish Armada (Jose Gartner de la Peña (1866-1918) 1892, oil on canvas) in the Museum of Málaga, Spain.

Jose Gartner, one of Ocon’s most promising disciples, was highly esteemed amongst Spanish painters for his mastery of the seascape genre. The canvas was his submission to the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1892. The ragged remnants of Philip II’s mighty fleet dashed against the sheer cliffs by the raging sea, won him a second-place medal and other distinctions at various international shows. As a result the Prado purchased the work in 1894, and Malaga received it on long-term loan in 1933.
