The Pipe of Freedom

This painting, depicting a former slave as an independent and free man, celebrates the abolition of slavery in the United States.

In the background the Emancipation Proclamation has been pasted over a yellow placard announcing a sale of slaves.

Smith submitted the painting to the Royal Academy in 1869 where it was rejected ‘on political grounds’. The painting, considered radical at the time, shows Smith as an enlightened thinker.

Temple of the Sibilla

This was one of the first paintings which Smith exhibited. Having studied painting in Italy he was keen to establish himself as an artist and to support himself through his work.

This painting, together with two others, was displayed at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts exhibition in 1850.

“A Fellah of Kinneh” by Thomas Stuart Smith in the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, Stirling

This painting depicts a native Egyptian from the town of Kinneh, now known as Qena, in the Nile delta. Painted at life size, the work was very unusual at a time when black culture was little represented in art.

Smith entered the work into the Royal Academy exhibition in London in 1869 where it was displayed in an ‘unfavourable position’.
