Portrait of a Lady by Fred Appleyard, “The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour, Mignard: The Power of Posing” at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery

Fred Appleyard was born in Middlesbrough in 1874. He trained at Scarbrough School of Art, then the National Art Training School in South Kensington and the Royal Academy Schools in London.

After the First World war Appleyard left London for Hampshire, where he lived for the next 45 years in the village of Itchen Stoke, near Alresford. He received several artistic awards, including The Turner Gold Medal, the Landseer Scholarship and the Creswick Prize.

Appleyard painted portraits, landscapes and classical and allegorical works. He exhibited numerous works at the Royal Academy, as well as at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
