Carmichael has shown preparations taking place for the Ascension Day parade in May. For this event, the Mayor’s Barge led a large group of ships along the Tyne to mark Newcastle’s river boundary.
The Mayor’s Barge is shown in the centre on the far side of the river. The old Tyne Bridge built in 1781 is on the left. A keel (barge) laden with coal has put its mast down to pass under the arch. Newcastle artist JW Carmichael was known for his ship scenes.
