Lady Reading a Book

Albert Reuss (1889-1975)

Reuss was already a successful artist in Vienna before he came to England in 1938 as a refugee following the Anschluss – Adolf Hider’s annexation of Austria to the German Reich. A touring exhibition of his work at the Laing Gallery,1945, included this picture. The size of the painting may reflect shortages of painting materials during the Second World War.
