Awarded to Lieutenant (Adjutant) William McBean, 93rd Sutherland Highlanders.

At Lucknow in 1858 he encountered 11 of the enemy and killed each one in turn with his sword. I was there to kill and I did my best in that.’ William enlisted as a Private and rose through the ranks to become a Major General.
