General ‘The Babe’ MacMillan (I897-I986) is one of the most famous and highly decorated Argylls. Commissioned into The Argylls in August I915, he was awarded the Military Cross on three occasions in the Ist World War. In the 2nd World War he fought in North Africa, commanded 15th Scottish Division in the Battle of Normandy and then the 5Ist Highland Division from the crossing of the Rhine. Between I947-48 he was GOC Palestine leading up to the establishment of Israel. He commanded Scottish Command from I949-52 and ended his military career as Governor and Commander-in-Chief Gibraltar from I952-55.
