Right:
Beryl Fowler (nee Menzies)
Beryl studied under Sir Hubert von Herkomer in Hertfordshire. Herkomer was a celebrated artist of the late Victorian period. Fowler’s exquisite Volendam portraits reflect his realist approach to depictions of the poor. The plain backgrounds used by the artist draw our attention to their faces, which are so detailed they were almost certainly painted from life.
