Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan

Eden Upton Eddis (1812 – 1901)

Oil painting on canvas, Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan, 1st Bt (1807-1886) by Eden Upton Eddis (1812 – Shalford 1901),1850 [since that is the date visible on the spine of one of the books – a Parliamentary Report – on the table to the right of him]. A full-length portrait of a young man, seated, in his library; his left hand is resting on his desk; on the floor beside him is a treasury box and pamphlets, one of which concerns relief and distress in Ireland. (This was Sir Charles’s responsibility,1845-7.) See also WAL/P/9 (in library) and WAL/P/94 (in study).

Provenance: According to a label on the back the portrait was presented to Lady Trevelyan by the ‘Officers of the Commissariat’; given with the property to the National Trust in 1941 by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, 3rd Bt (1870-1958)
