James ‘Putty’ Garbut (1820 –1885)

Currently featured in the exhibition “The Art of Conservation – damaged painting at south shields” – Conservation, South Shields Museum and Art Gallery

James Garbut’s nickname, ‘Putty’, derives from his job as a window glazier and house decorator. He worked in South Shields and painted pictures in his spare time. He painted many seascapes and landscapes in oil and watercolour.
