Captain William Hall

Johan Zoffany (1733-1810)

William Hall was the father of one of the Ashmolean’s greatest benefactors, Chambers Hall.

He served for twenty years as an officer in the East India Company, retiring as a captain. He is said to have been instrumental in arranging Zoffany’s journey to India in 1783, and this portrait of Hall in the uniform of a Captain in the East India Company probably dates from that period.
