Lucretia was a noble lady who committed suicide after being raped by the Roman king Tarquin. For centuries this was seen as an example of ‘virtuous’ female behaviour.
This painting has been described as a copy, but recent conservation work suggests traces of unfinished drapery beneath 19th century repaint.
A visitor to John Bowes’ home once mistook it for a family portrait!
