A Boar Hunt

after Giulio Romano (1499-1546)

This grisaille, or monochrome painting, is a copy after a drawing by Giulio Romano. It represents an episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (VIII). King Meleager gathered a group of warriors to chase the boar which had been sent by the goddess Diana to ruin the land of Calydon. Cupid fires his arrow to make Meleager fall in love with the huntress, Atalanta, to whom Meleager presented the head of the boar as a trophy. The huntsmen’s objection to the gift caused a war between the Calydonians and the Curetes, as well as king Meleager’s death.
