The Three Brothers, Sons of Thomas Dallas attributed to the artist George Watson (1767-1837), “The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour, Mignard: The Power of Posing” at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery

George Watson was born in Berwickshire into a wealthy landowning family, He studied painting under Alexander Nasmyth in Edinburgh, then, when he was 18, under Sir Joshua Reynolds in London. Having moved back to Scotland, Watson established himself as a portrait painter.

His work was particularly influenced by the style of Henry Raeburn, who was to become Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland.

Watson was a founder member of the Royal Scottish Academy, established in 1836, and he became its first president.
