The Love Letter by John Wood, “The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour, Mignard: The Power of Posing” at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery

John Wood was the son of the landscape artist and drawing teacher John George Wood. He was born in London and studied at Sass’s school and then at the Royal Academy, where in 1825, he was awarded the gold medal for painting. Wood became known for his biblical scenes and portraits. Prominent sitters included Sir Robert Peel, Earl Grey and John Britton. His paintings were exhibited both at the Royal Academy and the British Institution.

In this painting the lady holds a letter in one hand and a locket in the other. Alternative names for this painting are ‘The Proposal or The Keepsake’.
