Charles Goldsborough Anderson was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland in 1865. He moved to Landon and studied at the Royal Academy schools. He began exhibiting his artwork when he had three portraits displayed at the Royal Academy in 1888. Anderson married Mary Alice Maberty, the subject of this portrait, in Lewisham in 2895. The portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1900
