In this scene, a river barge is taking coal to a ship moored in the river. Further back, a ship is being built in a yard on the Gateshead bank. A shipyard is also squeezed between warehouses on the Newcastle side. Smoke is rising from conical bottle kilns used for glass or pottery manufacture near the old Tyne Bridge. William Daniell was an important painter of views who travelled from London to paint the Tyne and other scenes in the north of England.
